The 101st Rose Bowl: From Bowl Game to Playoff Game

September 18, 2014

We feel very fortunate to be in an area with so many great attractions. From Universal Studios and movie studios to great parks and restaurants. But one of the more historical, and perhaps memorable, attractions is The Rose Bowl; both the game and the stadium!

The first Rose Bowl game was staged in 1902 between Michigan and Stanford following the Tournament of Roses Parade. After a brief absence, it returned in 1916 and has been staged following the parade every year since. The Rose Bowl stadium was originally built in 1922, and the 1923 Rose Bowl was the first bowl game played in the new stadium.

The Rose Bowl has traditionally matched the Pac-12 champion against the Big 10 champion. Since 1947, champions from those two power conferences have clashed annually in the Rose Bowl with only a few exceptions.

Now in it’s 101st season, the Granddaddy of Them All is one of four bowl games forming the new four-team College Football Playoff. On January 1, 2015, the Rose Bowl will host a semifinal game pitting two of the top four FBS teams chosen for the playoffs following the 2014 regular season. The winner will advance to play in the College Football Playoff Championship in Arlington, Texas on January 12, 2015. Playoff participants can be selected from among the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac-12 champions or a pool of qualified at-large teams.

This historic event takes place right in our backyard; we couldn’t be more excited! And if you’re a college football fan, there’s no better place to be on January 1st!
