Los Angeles Olympics Bid – 2024

Here at the Hotel Amarano, we’re getting more and more excited about Los Angeles’ bid to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2024. Earlier this summer, the International Olympic Committee ushered LA into the second round of bidding alongside three European cities; on September 13, 2017, the IOC will make its final decision in Lima, Peru—and we hope it’s in favor of the City of Angels!

Los Angeles replaced Boston as the United States Olympic Committee’s 2024 candidate in August 2015. This month, Congress voted to formally endorse LA’s bid, demonstrating to the IOC its full support. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of the co-sponsors of the Senate’s resolution, said in a statement that “Los Angeles is an international city that truly embodies the Olympic spirit and is ready to welcome the entire world to the United States.”

The Bidding Cities

The competition’s stiff, as LA has some heavy-hitting Old World rivals for hosting honors: Paris, Rome, and Budapest. Paris has hosted the Summer Games twice before, in 1900 and 1924; it’s lost out on more recent bids in 1992, 2008, and 2012. Rome hosted in 1960 and bid unsuccessfully in 2004. Budapest has never had the Games, but not for lack of trying: Hungary’s capital has bid five times (in 1916, 1920, 1936, 1944, and 1960).

LA’s been a host city for the Summer Games two times, in 1932 and 1984. If it succeeds in its current bid, 2024 would mark the first Summer Games in the U.S. since Atlanta’s back in 1996.

LA 2024

The board of directors for LA 2024 (the official campaign for landing Los Angeles the 2024 Summer Games) includes chairman Casey Wasserman, Olympian Janet Evans, Paralympian Candace Cable, basketball icon Magic Johnson, labor official Maria Elena Durazo, and—signing on just this month—Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger.
