Here at Hotel Amarano, we’re proud to be a part of the 2nd Annual Shatterproof Challenge Held Rappel Alongside ALIS, a really remarkable fundraising event aimed at combating the tragedy of addiction.
Our parent company, LaSalle Hotel Properties, is again sponsoring the event, which takes place January 22 through the 24th during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in Los Angeles. Participating representatives of the hotel industry will memorably rappel down a whopping 26 stories of the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, and many more will be supporting them through donations.
The Story Behind the Challenge
All the money raised goes toward Shatterproof’s admirable mission. This national nonprofit helps raise awareness of how drug and alcohol addiction impacts individuals and families, fights against the societal stigma attached to sufferers of the disease—a stigma which can prevent these sufferers from seeking help—and advocates for policies and programs that provide comprehensive high-quality treatment. Shatterproof highlights the very real public-health crisis represented by addiction, associated costs of which (from healthcare to criminal justice) go beyond $700 billion every year. The number-one cause of accidental death in the country? Overdoses, which have increased fivefold since 1980.
Former chairman of HEI Hotels & Resorts Gary Mendell founded Shatterproof after losing his son Brian to addiction in 2011.

Shatterproof: Fighting Addiction on All Fronts
Among Shatterproof’s wide-ranging accomplishments are helping get the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) passed at the federal level and seeing addiction-treatment legislation implemented in 11 states, including California SB482 last September, which mandates that prescribers check a state database before prescribing any schedule II, III, or IV drugs.
Hotel Amarano: Spreading the Word About Shatterproof
We’re excited to again be doing our part to get the word out about Shatterproof’s work and stand in solidarity with the organization—and we’re excited, too, to see Tom descend those 26 stories later this month!
