Boutique Hotel near Griffith Observatory
One of the jewels of Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory on Mount Hollywood lies a mere hop, skip, and a jump from our boutique hotel here in Burbank, and it’s an absolute must-see on at least one of your visits with us.
The sights at this Southern California landmark, better than 80 years old, extend from the City of Angels skyline to deep into the star-studded firmament above: one heck of a viewshed, to put it mildly!
Introducing the Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory is named for Griffith J. Griffith, who at the end of the 19th century willed the land and funds for an observatory/planetarium to Los Angeles. Griffith maintained that the facility, which opened in 1935, should be free to the public, and that it remains.
Though much of its attention is focused skyward, the Griffith Observatory is also famous for the L.A. vistas it serves up, including an awesome view of the iconic Hollywood Sign.
From thrilling all-ages planetarium shows to nightly exploration of outer space through public telescopes, the Griffith Observatory offers a whole lot of daily wonderment. Here’s a quick overview!
Eyeballing the Intergalactic Yonder at the Griffith
The observatory maintains a fleet of telescopes open for public use, including the original Zeiss refracting telescope that, the Griffith suggests, has been looked through more than any other telescope on the planet. The Griffith Observatory telescopes are free for public viewing on every evening the place is open and the heavens are clear. Meanwhile, there are public star parties one Saturday a month as well.
It’s worth checking out the Observatory website’s Weekly Sky Report for a heads-up on what celestial bodies might be especially visible during the time of your visit.
Planetarium & Theater Presentations
The outstanding 290-seat Samuel Oschin Planetarium at the Griffith Observatory currently presents three shows on astronomical subjects: Centered in the Universe, Water is Life, and Light of the Valkyries (about the Northern Lights).
Meanwhile, the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater offers a history lesson on the Observatory in its “The Once & Future Griffith Observatory” presentation as well as weekly lectures, regular science demos, and other programs.
