Chargers Make Move to Los Angeles
Here at the Hotel Amarano, we’re all set to welcome the Chargers back to Los Angeles.
Chargers CEO Dean Spanos announced this month that the football team, which has played 56 seasons in San Diego, will move to the City of Angels to start their 2017 run. The Chargers actually played their inaugural 1960 season in LA, but just the one; the next year saw them the San Diego Chargers, and by 1967 they had settled into their home for a half-century: Qualcomm Stadium.
The Chargers management has been lobbying for more than a decade for a new stadium to be built in San Diego, and when the latest ballot measure failed last fall, the decision was made to uproot and return to the team’s original stomping ground. (You can read Spanos’s letter announcing the move over at the Chargers website.)
Joining the Rams in LA
It’s quite the development, given the erstwhile St. Louis Rams made the same call just two years ago: The reborn Los Angeles Rams played their first season back in LA in 2016 since 1979.
That means LA now claims not one but two National Football League franchises: the Rams in the NFC and the Chargers in the AFC.
Until their shared new digs at the Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park is finished (by 2019, if all goes according to plan), the Chargers will play a couple of seasons at the StubHub Center in Carson and the Rams in their old home of Memorial Stadium.
Even as the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, and Falcons battle it out in the final weeks before Super Bowl LI, we’re already looking ahead to next fall: It’s going to be amazing to see the Chargers kick off a whole new chapter in their venerable history. If you want to experience the dawn of this next era of Chargers football firsthand, take advantage of this interim period and get your tickets for the 2017 season: Given the StubHub Center seats 30,000, it’ll be a comparatively intimate venue for watching ballgames. (The Los Angeles Stadium will have room for 80,000-plus.)
