The Amarano Beat

The 2014 Burbank Comedy Festival

Back in the 1970s, Johnny Carson used to make fun of “Beautiful Downtown Burbank” to get a few chuckles from the Tonight Show studio audience. In addition, hundreds of comics made their big time debut on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, so what better place for a comedy festival than Burbank?

As you can tell, Burbank has been a center for comedy for a long time, but from August 17 to August 23, 2014, some of the funniest comics in the business will headline at The Burbank Comedy Festival – Adam Carolla, Wendy Liebman, and Jeff Garlin. Besides the big household names, 200 emerging comics will get some time on stage to showcase their best stuff. And if you’re a new comic– or trying to break into the biz—there will be open mic sessions, standup classes, discussion sessions, and tips from industry professionals.

If you’re a comedy fan, a developing comedy professional, or an entertainment professional looking to discover new talent, the Burbank Comedy Festival is THE place to be in mid-August. But in case you’re not convinced yet, here’s a sneak peak at some of the headliners for the festival:

Jeff Garlin

Jeff Garlin began doing standup in college, and then moved back to Chicago to perform with the legendary Second City improv troupe. His improv-inspired one-man show, “I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With,” was a sensation that ran for years on stage in Chicago during the 1990s and became a film in 2006. In between, Garlin became known through his side-splitting regular character on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and guest shots in major films and TV shows. Garlin is what you call “A Comedian’s Comedian,” because he never fails to break up even the most seasoned comedy veterans.

Wendy Liebman

Wendy Liebman began performing standup in the Boston area while doing post-grad research at Harvard University. The sharp, always surprising standup was one of the most prominent female comedians of the 1980s and 1990s, making multiple appearances on The Larry Sanders ShowLate Night with David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! In 2012, she was featured on a Showtime special Wendy Liebman: Taller On TV.

Adam Carolla

Adam Carolla began his standup career through improv classes and radio appearances in the Los Angeles area. The North Hollywood native was the co-host and co-creator of Comedy Central’s The Man Show with his friend Jimmy Kimmel, and followed up that success as the co-creator and regular performer on another Comedy Central show, Crank Yankers, from 2002-2007. In 2010, Carolla’s book In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks debuted on The New York Times’ Best Sellers List, and his second book, Not Taco Bell Material, also reached the bestseller list in 2012.

Seriously, how could you go wrong with that lineup!?

Oh, one last thing Don’t forget that the best place to stay is right here at Hotel Amarano, centrally located in beautiful (really!) downtown Burbank amid all the action.
